Kindergarteners are natural explorers and BOCES 4 Science kits turn their curiosity into discovery. From investigating pushes and pulls on the playground to tracking weather patterns and uncovering the secret lives of worms, these engaging units spark wonder while building a strong science foundation.

Pushes and Pulls
Playing with toys is a fun way for the youngest scientists to explore the forces of pushes and pulls. Students are challenged with describing the motion of objects and how forces affect them during a visit to the playground. They will experiment with how tracks at different heights change the distance cars travel and will enjoy the interactions in a lively kickball game.

Weather for Kindergarten
Using weather tools and looking at patterns, students will learn about local weather, seasons and how the sun impacts Earth’s surfaces. Students will begin to understand how forecasts help people prepare and respond to severe weather events. Using what they’ve learned, students will design solutions to try and keep playgrounds cool during hot, sunny conditions.

Worm Scouts
A rainy day leads to piles of worms that are evenly spaced along the center of a road. Relying on natural curiosity and science practices, students investigate the phenomenon while observing a classroom compost bin of red worms. Guided by fictional character Scout the Worm, students examine the interdependent relationships within the worms’ ecosystem.

To assist district decisions surrounding curriculum planning, BOCES 4 Science teachers created suggested pathways based on unit length and the typical school calendar. You can choose to follow a suggested pathway, use it as a reference or create your own science curriculum journey.

Suggested Pathway A

Pushes and Pulls ? Worm Scouts ? Weather for Kindergarten
  • Pushes and Pulls allows students to begin the school year investigating the science behind something they are already familiar with – play. It presents opportunities to explore science outdoors, during recess, and in Physical Education.
  • Worm Scouts challenges students to explain a natural phenomenon related to a common outdoor animal.
  • Weather for Kindergarten is packed with engineering design challenges that prepare students to think like an engineer. 
Throughout all three, students plan and carry out investigations, analyze and interpret data, and identify cause and effect relationships.

Suggested Pathway B

Weather for Kindergarten → Pushes and Pulls → Worm Scouts
  • Weather for Kindergarten is a wonderful way to begin the school year because it establishes calendar routines that will be used for the remainder of the school year. In addition, students begin to plan and carry out investigations, analyze and interpret data, and identify cause and effect relationships – which they will continue to do throughout kindergarten and in subsequent years. 
  • Pushes and Pulls allows students to get outside to investigate the science of play.
  • By wrapping up with Worm Scouts, students will use the skills they have been developing all year to solve a mystery.
